This man is Galileo Galilei and he was a 17th Century Italian scientist who studied mathematics and physics. But, he is probably best known for his discoveries in astronomy. Did you know that he discovered the rings around the planet Saturn, and four of the dozens of satellites ( word for: smaller planet or object that revolves around a larger planet) that orbit around Jupiter? He also created his very own telescope!
In his early life, Galileo went to the University of Pisa to study medicine but ended up studying and majoring in mathematics and while in Pisa looked into the Aristotelian view and continued studying mathematics. But Galileo had some financial problems and had to leave the school before earning his degree. He taught at the University of Pauda but on his own, studied the physics of motion, published books, gave lectures and studied astronomy, so he decided to turn his own developed telescope up. And look at what he found through the years!
After two decades of studying physics and astronomy, Galileo was piling evidence that proved the Copernican theory* was correct and he put all of it into his book called the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems and he tried to keep his voice neutral. The church looked at it and decided to not believe it and put him under house arrest for the rest of his life. Galileo died on January 8, 1642 in Arcetri, Italy near Florence.
Now, today all of Galileo’s work is available to the world to read for themselves and the Catholic church has publicly said that the choices they made concerning Galileo were wrong. Everybody thinks Galileo and other scientists in his time were geniuses, and they were! But they were really just men trying to do what they thought was right and show people what they believed in.
