Bone Marrow

Bones are a very important part of our body. They carry out the important job of holding our body upright and protect our vital organs.  But I want to focus on another important feature our bones have and why it is important: bone marrow.

Bone Marrow

There are two types of marrow, red marrow and yellow marrow and they are separated into two layers.

RED MARROW

Red marrow ( the big outer layer) is the thickest layer and is also called myeloid tissue which means it is responsible for the production of red blood cells.  This is important because without red marrow to produce red blood cells we could not get oxygen delivered around our body.  It produces cells that keep us alive.

YELLOW MARROW

Yellow marrow is made up mostly of fat cells and doesn’t do much aside from producing white blood cells.  It’s important job is as reserves for red marrow.  It can convert itself into red bone marrow in case of sever blood loss.  Although it may not be crucial to our survival, yellow marrow is an example of how our bodies are prepared in case you ever lose a lot of blood.

I didn’t realize how important bone marrow was.  I learned that bone marrow doesn’t just benefit the bones in our body, but quite literally keeps us alive!
